PHOTO OF THE DAY- Beautiful Australian Beach Sunset in HDR

The grass was so soft and fluffy on this coastal headland where I was able to lie down, read and enjoy the view. There was a girl who came and sat by me on the grass and faced the sun to meditate, a perfect place for it with the sounds of the ocean and the feel of the salty winds. Down below about 50 surfers were all lined up catching waves that gained height and momentum from wrapping around the headland like a sling shot. Some local surfers told me that the good waves used to be on the other side of this headland but huge storms had reshaped the sand bars removing 3-4 metres in some areas.

I was able to traverse along a little trail on the other side of this headland high above waves crashing into the rocks below. The cliffs were much higher with sheer drop off’s, a completely different environment to this one. But I was rewarded with another magnificent view of the coastline in the opposite direction to this one. The headland allowed me to take coastal sunset photos with the beach and ocean in them, usually a very difficult feat to achieve on the eastern side of Australia. I found this beach just near the Gold Coast and the border between Queensland and New South Wales

Info For Photographers

Photomatix PRO – Is a MAC and PC HDR software for creating stunning HDR images. They have a free trial, but if you end up buying a copy of Photomatix you can get a 15% Discount with the coupon code LukeZemePhotography

I used the 32-bit Photomatix Lightroom plug-in(click for link) to tonemap the 5 bracket images from my Nikon D800. I then edited the 32bit Tonemapped image and the 5 original images as TIFF’s in Photoshop, a bit like a manual Digital Blend method masking in elements of each image I like. I used On1’s Perfect Effects, Filter Software (click for Link) and masked in various Filters into the image. Perfect Effects 4 is available as a standalone or as a part of the Photo suite 7, which I own.

  • OnOne has an amazing Filter program called Perfect Effects. When you see how many features are in this program you will be amazed 🙂 It has absolutely every kind of filter you can imagine and ones you can’t. I use this one all the time !
  • Topaz Adjust 5 is one of my favourite Filter programs to use for HDR images, and Topaz wanted me to pass on a 15% discount if you put in the code LukeZemePhotography

Thanks everyone, Luke
