Seascape from Curl Curl #1- Title- “Divided Sea”
Recently I had a guest artist on my blog, Mykal Hall, and he reignited my passion for seascape photography. When I arrived in Sydney a few months ago I was seduced by the bright lights of the skyscrapers, and of course the iconic locations on the Harbour like the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. But there are so many amazing locations up and down the coast line. The Northern Beaches of Sydney are especially blessed with beauty and I’ve been exploring them and researching locations I want to shoot. It’s actually quite enjoyable driving from beach to beach and searching around the rock pools conceiving ideas and concepts.
Often I don’t like to shoot locations when there aren’t any clouds because I think clouds are like the photographers paint palette. So I tend to save my prime locations for days when there are a nice set of clouds. That said when you can find interesting stories to tell in your images the lack of clouds becomes less important in telling it.
Normally I will just choose the best image to edit from a shoot and put my efforts into crafting it into a form close to my memories of the scene… On this particular occasion though I had a favourite and my girlfriend another, so I decided to edit and release them both. The first image is my fav and the second is hers, enjoy and share.
So out of the two compositions which story/narrative speaks to you most?

I started with a single RAW file in photoshop and applied one of my own HDR Lightroom presets to both of the images. I used the “Breathtaking Moments” preset and you can find more info on my “Adobe Lightroom Preset Pack” here. The pack contains 50 presets and is ready to be released very very soon, we are just waiting on some web propagation.
The next part of the workflow is to open the image in Adobe Photoshop CC and take it into On1 Perfect Effects. I applied about 4 or 5 layers of tonal and colour adjustments before bringing it back into Photoshop. I masked in various colour changes as well adding selective dodging to the water.
I finalised the workflow by reducing the noise in the water and the sky with Topaz DeNoise 5.
